Fall’s New Pants

September 18, 2007

Hello ladies.  Well, Fall is getting closer and closer by the minute.  It is officially time to stuff away those white linen pants and pull out your nice comfy sweaters.

The next trend of the season is actually a surprise to me – Wide Legged Pants.  This trend snuck up on me because for the past couple of seasons it has been all about the skinny jeans.  Skinny jeans were everywhere and unfortunately too many people were trying to wear this look.  Nice look if you are a size 0, no curves and 5”11.  But if you are like the majority of the population – especially with any type of curves – please leave the skinny jeans on the rack.  What many didn’t realize is that skinny jeans wind up emphasizing exactly what you don’t want emphasized.  My opinion – lets leave that look to to the Hollywood folks.

On to the wide legged pant – this is the HOT pant of the season.  They come in all types of styles with variations ranging from work pants, to denim (which are NICE!), to party pants.  The wide legged pant is a fresh silhouette and a welcomed alternative to the skinny pants and the best part, flatters most body types.  Lets look at the different styles:

There is the trouser pant which is slightly loose throughout the entire pant.  This look is nice in denim.

                              trouser - denim.jpg                   trouser denim.jpg

The flared leg pant which is fitted throughout the top portion yet slightly looser than the boot cut at the bottom.  Good look for work – a way to stay on top of the fashion without jeopardizing the work place attire.

gap - wide legged pant.jpg                brown flared leg.jpg

And then there is the true wide legged from top to bottom.  These bottoms will look really nice with a feminine top and some classic pumps and a nice clutch and you can transform this look from work to evening out.

black wide legs.jpg              banana republic - wide legged pant.jpg

The good news is most body figures can pull off this trend, however, the bad news is if not done right, you may end up looking frumpy or stout.  The key to wearing this trendy look is to create a long, lean silhouette.  And with fashion, there are always do’s and don’ts to pulling off a killer look.

Tip #1:    Stilettos or high heeled shoes – A must.

Unless you are 6 ft tall, you must wear heels with these pants.  The fastest way to make this look unflattering is to wear ballet slippers.  Only tall people can pull this off.

Tip #2:     Get the right length.

It is vital that the pant skims the surface of the ground – this also helps to create the long, slimming effect.  No floods please, safe bet you will look a hot mess!

Tip #3:     Balance out the width with the right top.

Try pairing the wide legged pant with a narrow feminine top or a short fitted jacket.  Keeping the top pretty fitted only helps elongate the body.

Tip #4:    Keep pants fairly fitted in the waist, hip and thigh area.

Once again this helps elongate the body.  The most flattering wide legged pants are the trouser style pant or the wide legged pants which are fitted throughout the top half and fairly wider than the classic bootcut style at the bottom.

Tip #5:    Most importantly – Have fun with it!

Until next time – go shopping………………………………………………s.

Fall Fashion 2007!!!

August 20, 2007

We are going to talk about my absolute favorite fashion  season  – FALL.  I know, I know, we don’t want summer to end – and believe me I’m not a fan of snow, cold ice and rain, dreary days and everything else that comes with Cleveland winters.  However, I love, love, love fall clothes and the cold reality of winter will be upon us sooner than we think – so we need to discuss how to look good through the long, cold, dreary months coming up.

You may be asking why do you love fall fashion so much.  And I would respond with what not to love about fall fashion.  The rich fall colors, the comfortable fabrics and textures, the pretty winter coats and we cannot forget about the wonderful world of BOOTS.  Oh my, yes ladies, I will have a special post dedicated to BOOTS!!  In the meantime, you cannot begin shopping for fall clothes without knowing what the top trend color is for the season.

There is a new black in town this season………………and its name is grey.  Be it light, dark or charcoal grey (my favorite), it is the choice of color this fall season.  To keep grey from looking boring to trendy, add a pop of color to your grey outfit.  Matter of fact, another trend color this season is purple – be it amethyst, plum, berry – anything in the purple family is in this fall and is a wonderful combo with grey.  Grey is such a versatile alternative to black and is also a great neutral – almost every color looks good with grey.

                                                               gray suit1.jpg

Here is your classic grey suit.  I’m a lover of grey pinstripe suits – but either way, if you enjoy wearing suits, then you will need your grey suit.  I recommend it in a dark or charcoal grey – especially if you want to go from office look to night out look!

                                                             gray frlly skirt1.jpg

The straight pencil skirts look good in either black or grey.  And as mentioned above, this season grey is the new black.  Pair this skirt with a teal or purple top……Nice.  Or you can go for the sophisticated, classic look by adding a crisp, tailored white collared top.  That’s actually one of my favorite looks.  Add some 3 to 4 inch stilletto’s and a stand-out piece of jewelry….that look will make a grown man cry!

                                                                   gray sweater1.jpg

Here is your grey sweater that is a must in everyone’s wardrobe.  Pair it with a white cami or tank underneath and some nice dark rinsed jeans or black wide legged trouser…….great combination.

                                                                gray sweater and jeans1.jpg

Prepster look.  Not everyone is a fan of this look – but I like it……………great casual look, especially to wear on the weekends while shopping, going out to eat, etc.

                                                                 gray boots1.jpg

And last but not least, I added this picture due to the grey boots.  Once again, we will have a post all about BOOTS!

Point is….get at least one grey item for your wardrobe.  It looks good with a variety of colors and is an excellent alternative to wearing black all the time.

Until next time…………………………………………….s.

Vested Fashion

May 21, 2007

If you were around in the early 1990’s – chances are you have noticed that the menswear vest is making a comeback.  And if done right it is a super hot look.  However, just because vests are making a comeback does not necessarily mean you need to pull your vest out from the late 80’s / early 90’s and wear it today.  The vest have been updated slightly.  Also known as cropped vests, it creates a very tailored and polished look – which I am a fan of.  I don’t believe that everyone can pull this trend off – because you literally have to do it right in order for it to look good or you will run the risk of looking a hot mess!  The key to taking the vest from boring menswear to trendy, feminine look is wearing the cropped vest similar to a corset.  So the first tip of the day is to make sure the vest fits you well.  Not too tight ladies – or we will see all the wonderful rolls you weren’t trying to show.

The second tip is what to pair it with.  My absolute favorite – a pair of dark washed jeans (skinny or bootcut).  Or if you are into the wide-legged jeans, the cropped vest goes well with this look.  Pairing the vest with a pencil knee length skirt is very chic.  But the most important decision is what top to wear underneath the vest – if you dare to wear a top underneath it at all.  Wearing a vest alone with a pair of jeans can be worn as a daytime look or transform into an evening look by adding your favorite heels.                         Kate hudson3.jpg                      victoria_beckham_300x400.jpg  The most popular way the cropped vest is worn is layered with a button down top and the top is generally longer than the vest.  This look can be worn with jeans, trousers or pencil skirt.  It creates a very tailored and polished look.

vests with cropped pants1.jpg                   Mandy+Moore+Vest2.jpg                 vests1.jpg  Another suggestion is wearing a t-shirt or tank top underneath – and that look should be worn with jeans – however I AIN’T mad at you if you rock some killer heels with this look.   It creates a more causal, yet pulled together look.

britney_spears7.jpg                      j lo vest2.jpg I don’t believe the cropped vest is for everyone – but if you can pull it off it will transform your outfit to a chic, might I say urban, polished look.  One fashion no-no – please leave the ties at home Ladies.  One menswear in your outfit is enough!

White Bottoms!!!

April 19, 2007

Andre asked me the other day when is it ok to wear white pants.  And it got me thinking about all the people who wear white pants and those who are doing it right and others………well let’s just keep this post positive!!  White is a very pretty color to wear in the spring and summer.  It has a very fresh, vibrant and clean look.  And that is the topic of this post is how to wear white keeping the look fresh, fun and my favorite word classic or timeless.  The number one mistake you can make is not wearing the right material under your white pants – if you get what I mean!  With white pants, you can see everything ladies – especially when the sun is out.  Do society a favor by not showing us your “Victoria’s Secret”!   If you can do that, you are well on your way to a nice look.

Below are some examples of how to wear white bottoms:

                                           nicole.jpg                  katie.jpg

You can’t go wrong with a white suit.  You can wear to the office but I like this look out at night.  Paired with the right shoes, handbag and jewelry - very NICE!  If you think the black top with a white suit is too 1970’s – John Travolta disco era – then pair with another color.  I’m thinking a chocolate cami would look nice.

ralph1.jpg White top and bottom – classic look.  Add a metallic bracelet to complete the look.   Or to make this look a little more casual – add a jean jacket.

white shorts1.jpg White and black together is timeless.  I like the black jacket paired with the shorts. That’s nice if you’re going on a vacation - Islands, Miami or even Vegas.

patterened top1.jpg       linen trousers1.jpg   Color with white is pretty when done right.  The key to pulling this look off is try not to wear bold, bright colors with a bright white bottom.  You can easily cross the line from trendy to tacky.  With an outfit like this – minimal accessories are required.  Possibly a small bracelet is only needed.

Fashion tip:  When you wear white, you will be noticed.  Don’t distract or overdo it with your jewelry – more is definitely less.  Metallic jewelry looks really nice with white.

Please note – all fashion tips are only my opinions!  And yes the whole theory of “you can’t wear white after labor day” is so 1960’s – but I will say that there is a different type of white you should wear in the fall and winter.  Its called winter white!

Until next week………………S.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

April 11, 2007

You can not talk about fashion without mentioning shoes.  Shoes, in my opinion, is the lifeline of fashion.  They can either make or break an outfit.  You can wear the hottest outfit, but if your shoes are a hot mess, you have committed the unexcusable and unforgivable fashion sin!

If you have been to any shoe store within the last couple of months – then you already know that the trend right now are platform shoes.  Platforms are everywhere and they are so many different styles and they are so versatile that you just can’t wrong.  I will admit, when platforms first came on the scene, I wasn’t a lover of them.  I am a 4 inch stilletto loving women and the platforms were too chunky for me.  But recently they have updated them and some of my favorite shoes are my platforms and since they are now making platform stillettos, I am in shoe heaven.   Lets take a look at some of the styles:

Classic Platform Pump

Christian platforms.jpg            brown plat (J. Simpson).jpg          patent platform (Steve Madden).jpg

As you can see they have incorporated my stilletto heel which makes these my favorite.  These can be worn with just about anything – jeans, skirts, dresses, suits and shorts.  What is so great about the classic pump is they can be worn at the office or out at night.

Sexy slingback!

                   slingback (J. Simpson).jpg       red slingback (Guess).jpg      snake skin platforms (S. Madden).jpg

If you have nice legs, you can pull these off with a pencil skirt or shorts.  Shorts with platform heels -that’s what its all about!

shorts with platforms.jpg           long shorts with platforms.jpg         skirt with platform heels.jpg

Poppin peep toe!

                                  brown platforms - J. Simpson.jpg            Aldo.jpg

Peep toe pumps takes the classic pump to a new level.  Just like the pumps, these shoes can be worn in the office or out at night.  Unless you work for my company where OPEN TOE ISN’T ALLOWED:-( That’s another topic!  My opinion peep toe shoes look really nice with a fun dress.

                                                   Rosario.jpg                  Paris Hilton.jpg

 Other styles:

I could go on forever showing the various styles of platforms shoes.  Just know that these shoes are the top picks for this spring and summer and they come in so many styles, prints and colors.  There is no reason why every woman can’t have a pair in her closet – unless you just don’t wear heels.

Until next week……………..S.

Hello Spring!!!

April 4, 2007

Spring is an excellent time to revamp everything – from cleaning your house, making plans for the summer and re-organizing your closet. I truly enjoy fashion – clothing, shoes, makeup, accessories. So every week I will post a fashion tip – what’s hot for the upcoming season. Here’s the first one:

This spring and summer is all about colors – bold colors – and it appears that all colors are really in this season. But the topic of discussion this week is yellow. Yellow is becoming my favorite this season and what is so great about it is there are so many different shades of yellow – that everyone, no matter what skin tone can get into it. The key with pulling off yellow is to make it an accent color in your wardrobe – too much yellow will have you loking like a banana!

For example: Pairing a yellow shirt with a pair of dark-washed jeans is a classic yet trendy look.

shorts.jpg jeans w. yellow2.jpg

Another way to incorporate this trend is by adding yellow accessories to your outfit. Note: accessories can transform any old outfit into the current trend. By just adding a yellow bracelet or a yellow handbag will turn your boring, everyday outfit into something fresh, young and vibrant. So instead of spending a lot money trying to update your wardrobe, adding accessories will take your outfit from blah to FIERCE!

yellow bracelet.jpg yellow bag.jpg
Or you can rock some yellow platform heels.

yellow shoe.jpg

Note: I wouldn’t wear yellow shoes with a yellow shirt – too matchy – matchy. You will be looking like a banana in no time! The tip to rocking yellow shoes is to allow the shoe to be the focal point of the outfit by pairing the shoes with a neutral and simple shape outfit. For instance, a white shirt w/ a black pencil skirt with yellow shoes will add that nice pop of color. It will turn such a classic look into something young, fun and trendy.
